Artist Statement

I am not an architect and never wanted to be. And my works are about just that. And not because I dreamed of becoming an architect, but could not. But because I always knew that the era in which I would like to design buildings has passed. And it did just fine without me. It said a lot and powerfully. That allows me, without regrets about the failed profession, to admire, explore, try to understand more deeply, find new meanings for myself in the architecture of the era of Brutalism. And to infect other people with this love, so that they do not want to destroy the buildings and monuments of those years, but see in them the poetics of a simple but balanced composition, the absence of superfluous and the presence of monumental and important.

BIO

Alexandra Pikunova was born in 1981 in Russia. Currently she lives and works in Munich, Germany.

Prior to starting her art career, Alexandra worked in IT consulting and then, at the age of 30, started her education and career as a product designer. As a designer, Alexandra created her own project, within which she crafted functional, but at the same time somewhat artistic objects, made of concrete and plaster. Already during her design and craft practice, Alexandra created a number of art works and participated in an art collective exhibition dedicated to the problems of upcycling.

After moving to Germany, she realized that working in the art world would allow her to say more and more expressively than working in the field of design. This led her to artistic experiments, and the creation of the first cyanotype works. In her artistic practice Alexandra brings her longstanding interest in Brutalist architecture. To date, Alexandra has participated in several exhibition and now she is actively enhancing her art portfolio.
